When I first met my client in Hermosa, I knew this would be a project unlike any other I had to date.
He told me, "I love Palm Springs, and I'm a little crazy" (cut to his living room with purple carpet crawling up the wall…and is that a stripper pole??), "Welp, moving on!" he said.
But after meeting him and seeing the space, I wanted to elevate the house; I wasn't allowed to change counters and only had X amount of money to do the job.
I looked around and said, "For starters, let's do this and this…", he said, "Stop! I don't want you to tell me anything. Just do it."
Those words are both the greatest and worst things you can ever hear as a designer. I'll address the worst part first because people will say, oh, just do whatever, but they never mean that. They truly know what they want. They just don't know how to communicate it. So when someone says, “I'm a little scared.” The other side of that is exhilaration because you're thinking… amazing!!!! I can do what I think is best for this client. So, in short, this project was unique. Knowing he liked Palm Springs and was a wild child at heart, we can have some fun here.
The wallpaper in the guest room, the pink bar, the wallpaper throughout, and the mint green couch in the living room are just a few examples of FUN! The challenges were not being able to change out counters because he is renting, but we worked around that! Taking the attention off the counters and onto the walls or the floors was something we could change.
So that's what we did! We lightened the floors, gave the walls and cabinets a makeover, and had fun with color. Then, ensuring we didn't overwhelm the space, we went for it!
On reveal day, I said, "Are you nervous?" and a true story he responded, "Even if I don't love it, you're giving me a new energy that I need" ( I may or may not have cried). But what a beautiful gift he gave us at House & Home. The freedom to transform his space with an open mind and open arms. So now judge for yourself if our wild child was happy…
